Ernest Zhanaev
A human rights professional with sixteen years of project management, including in post-conflict zone, where I investigated abuses against ethnic minorities working closely with international missions and civil leaders to raise awareness about human trafficking issues, combat ill-practice of local authorities contributing to the issue.

I investigated 152 cases of human rights abuse (38 of these were high-profile). I led an analysis of torture practice in Kyrgyzstan for the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan (2007), as well as a successful campaign to adopt the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention Against Torture by the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.

One of the outcomes of my human rights and project activity were the establishment of the first-ever national torture prevention mechanism in Central Asia and the first rehabilitation centre for victims of torture in Central Asia. I conducted legal research of compliance of practice to the international human rights standards.

Among my achievements are multiple research papers examining legal and policy issues. I presented papers at public and expert group discussions. Some of these were organised or facilitated by myself in collaboration with the United Nations, Freedom House, European Commission and other agencies.

A love of challenge and open-mindedness motivated me to achieve success in five other project deliveries through design, development and implementation involving such global actors as the Asian Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Japan Government, USAID and DFID.

Design, development and delivery of training is another dimension of my rich experience intended to increase the capacity of prominent human rights activists, law enforcement, and local governing bodies including high-level Government officials to combat the practice of torture. These resulted in the creation of the high-level inter-agency group to raise public awareness about facts of torture; the establishment of the conflict prevention frameworks under the Prosecution Office to promote peacebuilding in post-conflict areas.

Having been a donor focal point working with EU EIDHR, I have an excellent knowledge of project development, M&E, and hand on experience of working standards and practices followed by a range of donors, including the German MFA, USAID, DFID, EU, and UNDP.

Finally, I love to work with people and for the people. I am a great team player and a networker. I am always keen to learn new skills and enjoy working outside of my comfort zone to achieve more.
